Forest monitoring is primary a system of assessment of forest environment and health condition of stands, based on continuous or periodic observations and measurements of the selected indicators within the network of permanent observation plots.

 

Showing spatial variability of health condition of forests.
Monitoring the changes in the health condition of forests over time.
Analysis of cause-effect relationships between the forest health condition and environmental factors, both biotic and abiotic ones.
Elaborating short-term prognoses of changes in the health condition of forests.

 

Providing information about the health condition of forests to the State Forests administration units which may facilitate silvicultural and economic decision-making and forest planning.

Collecting information that may prove useful for formulation of forest and ecological national policies.

Fulfilling international obligations under the Convention on Long-Range Transboundary Air Pollution, Convention on Biodiversity Protection, and resolutions of Ministerial Conferences on Forest Protection in Europe (Strasbourg, Helsinki, Lisbon, Vienna).
